Des O'Callaghan is a seasoned and highly regarded professional in the Business Continuity Management field with 25 years of experience in building and maintaining BCM programs in a number of companies, both large and small, primarily in the financial sector, but also through consulting in a wide range of organizations, including telecommunications and utilities. His most recent full-time post prior to early retirement in 2010 was Global Director of Continuity Services for Manulife Financial Corporation. Des is widely recognized for his abilities in performing BCM assessments, risk and business analyses, BCM program development, crisis management planning and exercise planning and facilitation. In his semi-retirement he is currently engaged in both education and independent consulting in business continuity.
Des is a Certified ISO 22301 Lead Implementer and Certified PECB Trainer. In 1996 Des was professionally certified as Canada's first Fellow of the Business Continuity Institute (BCI). Des is an approved BCI instructor, with previous teaching experience delivering a suite of BCM courses, which he himself developed, in a 4-course business continuity certificate program at George Brown College in Toronto from 2006 to 2009. Des is a recognized speaker on BCM, presenting regularly at such events as the World Conference on Disaster Management (WCDM), various Disaster Recovery Information Exchange (DRIE) symposiums in Toronto and Kitchener and recently also at the annual Infonex Canadian Emergency Management conference in Ottawa.
Des is currently on the Board of the Canadian Chapter of the BCI as Director of Communications. He has been actively involved in DRIE for over 25 years, regularly holding board positions, directing Communications and editing the quarterly newsletter since 1994. Des is a member of the Education Committee for the WCDM conference and serves on several industry awards committees. Des himself was recipient of the 2009 National Award of Excellence in Business Continuity, presented by the Canadian Centre of Emergency Preparedness at the 19th annual WCDM in Toronto.
