New ISO standard puts humans at the centre of business

2019-03-17

Gone are the days when the workplace was built around a fairly straightforward structure, consisting of employer, employee, customer. The winds of technological change may be sweeping away traditional models, but ISO 27501 is helping managers build a more sustainable one for the future.

From the advent of the Internet to what is now known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the latest cutting-edge technologies - among them robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things - are fundamentally changing how we live, work and relate to each other. The issue for business in this new era is not so much about the bottom line, or even just corporate social responsibility, it is also about taking a human-centred approach to the future of work and finding the right tools to ensure that organizations are successful and sustainable.

The likes of AI are presenting a great opportunity to help everyone - leaders, policy makers and people from all income groups and countries - to lead more enriching and rewarding lives, but they are also posing challenges for how to harness these technologies to create an inclusive, human-centred future.

2019-03-11

Jamaica is vulnerable to natural disasters and the country is often forced to find billions of dollars to recover from devastating hurricanes.

Phishing attacks spiked by 250% in 2018

2019-03-07

Microsoft's new Security Intelligence Report reveals evolving tactics of hackers.

A new report from Microsoft found that phishing attacks increased 250% over the course of 2018. According to Microsoft's Security Intelligence Report (SIR) volume 24, attackers have shifted tactics and are now targeting multiple points of attacks within one campaign.

"Hacking is a multi-billion-dollar industry. If it was being run by one company rather than a mix of organized crime syndicates, lone wolves and governments, it would be comparable to a major NASDAQ tech business", said Colin Bastable, CEO of cybersecurity test and training company Lucy Security.

Reinventing Anti-Money Laundering with complexity

2019-03-05

Beyond Madoff: Anti-Money Laundering with Quantitative Complexity Management. By JB Beckett, Author of 'New Fund Order'.

Introduction: Anomaly-based Anti-Money Laundering Software (A-AMLS) with QCM

In finance, Complexity can become inextricably linked to the rise of fraud. Complexity is the reciprocal of transparency. In a simple transparent system it is difficult to disguise fraudulent anomalies. The system remains resilient. However the number of financial products and product complexity is increasing; some are made deliberately complex, others escape their creator's control by refusing to follow a Gaussian distribution here or a linear correlation there.

The presence of highly complex products increases the complexity of financial markets, offering new opportunities for fraudulent and illicit operations. High complexity is a great way to hide incompetence, inefficiency, fraud and makes it difficult to identify responsibilities. Ponzi schemes (a form of fraud and money laundering) like Bernie Madoff were born out of investor desire to apply Complexity to escape market volatility. Likewise the incompetence of the custodians who accept deposits, monitor assets and pay on maturity must be addressed.

How to tackle today's IT security risks

2019-03-03

Industry experts estimate that annual losses from cybercrime could rise to USD 2 trillion by next year. With countless new targets added every day, especially mobile devices and connected "things", a joined-up approach is essential.

The attraction of cybercrime to criminal hackers is obvious: tangled webs of interactions, relatively low penalties, disjointed approaches on money laundering and potentially massive payouts.

The key is preparation and seeing vulnerabilities, and resilience, in terms of interactions with overall management systems, and that's where Information Security Management Systems (ISMS) standard ISO/IEC 27001 comes in.

Close-up of Facebook notifications on a smartphone. This is the flagship of the ISO/IEC 27000 family of standards, which was first published more than 20 years ago. Developed by ISO/IEC JTC 1, the joint technical committee of ISO and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) created to provide a point of formal standardization in information technology, it has been constantly updated and expanded to include more than 40 International Standards covering everything from the creation of a shared vocabulary (ISO/IEC 27000), risk management (ISO/IEC 27005), cloud security (ISO/IEC 27017 and ISO/IEC 27018) to the forensic techniques used to analyse digital evidence and investigate incidents (ISO/IEC 27042 and ISO/IEC 27043 respectively).

What will we be saying after the next really big one?

2019-02-18

Why are we surprised, caught off guard, when the realities that crisis inevitably brings don't fit our processes or expectations?

In her Pulitzer Prize-winning article "The Really Big One", New Yorker staff writer Kathryn Schulz tells the story of the worst natural disaster in the history of North America. According to scientists, on or about January 26, 1700, a massive earthquake in the Pacific Northwest ripped a gash in the earth's crust along a line from Vancouver Island in Canada south nearly six hundred miles into Northern California, causing massive devastation.

The geological record indicates that these "great earthquakes" (those with a magnitude of eight or higher) occur in this area of the Pacific Northwest about every five hundred years on average.

In "The Really Big One", Schulz describes for us the implications of this revelation. When it comes, the next Really Big One could impact an area of 140,000 square miles and devastate major population centers like Seattle and Tacoma in Washington, and Portland, Eugene, and Salem in Oregon. Seven million people could be cast into this parallel universe, of which nearly 13,000 people could die and another 27,000 could be injured. When it happens, we would need to provide shelter for a million displaced people, and food and water for another two and a half million.
